Tried freehand fading for 6 years before a barber in Austin showed me a $15 clipper guide
Was down there for a wedding last August and popped into this shop, the guy watched me do one cut and just handed me his clipper with the guard on. He goes 'bro you're making this way harder than it needs to be' and now I can't believe I was fighting with a comb for so long. Anyone else pick up a simple trick way later than they should have?

My buddy spent five years blending with a sponge before someone showed him a brush.

The sponge thing works for some textures but honestly your buddy was probably making a mess too. I started out using a sponge on my own hair back in 2015 and it just left patchy spots everywhere. A brush is way more forgiving.
