Rookie move: spent $60 on a fancy rub and it ruined my brisket

Bought this gourmet coffee based rub from a booth at the Memphis BBQ Fest last month. Sounded awesome but all I tasted was bitter gritty coffee on the bark. My whole crew said it tasted like burnt espresso. Stick with simple salt pepper garlic man. Anyone else get burned by a trendy rub at a competition or festival?

What was the rub brand? I need to know who to avoid.

You got me, @kai657. I used to be all about trying every new rub that came out, thought it was the secret to winning competitions and whatnot. But a bourbon vanilla one I grabbed at a festival last year turned my brisket into something that tasted like cheap candy and ash, totally killed the whole dinner. That was the moment I went back to just salt, pepper, and a little garlic powder, and I haven't looked back since. Your crew was right, that burnt espresso taste is a real killer.
