Vent: dropped $180 on a Thermoworks Smoke and it died mid brisket in Waco
Was doing an overnight cook for my brother's birthday, 14 pound packer on the offset, and the thing just froze at 3am showing 165 internal. Had to guess for four hours and pulled it at what I hoped was probe tender, turned out okay but I was sweating bullets the whole time. For that kind of money I expected it to outlast a $20 Ikea thermometer, not quit on the second cook. Anyone else have a unit crap out on them during a big smoke, or did I just get a lemon?
The part about guessing for four hours is what got me. My buddy had a Thermapen go weird on him during a turkey fry one Thanksgiving, kept reading 15 degrees low. He pulled the bird way too early and we ended up eating sides for dinner while the turkey went back in the oven. The funny thing is his cheap dial thermometer from the grocery store was dead on the whole time. We tested everything after and the fancy one was the only thing lying. Now he keeps a $15 backup in the drawer just in case. For $180 I would be calling Thermoworks and making them send a new one, that is a lot of money for something that quit on cook number two.
