Just learned that putting a wooden spoon across a boiling pot actually stops it from boiling over

A neighbor told me to try this trick after my pasta water erupted for the third time last week, so I tested it with a cheap bamboo spoon and it kept the foam from spilling over every single time. has anyone else had this work or did I just get lucky with my pot size?
