My uncle in Dallas bet me $50 I couldn't make rice without a rice cooker, so I tried the finger trick
My uncle in Dallas laughed when I said I was thinking about buying a rice cooker for my tiny apartment kitchen. He said he hasn't used one in 30 years and just uses the finger method: rinse the rice, add water until it hits the first knuckle of your index finger when you touch the top of the rice. I told him there was no way that works every time. He bet me $50 I couldn't get fluffy rice three times in a row without a cooker. So I tried it last week with jasmine rice, three nights in a row, and every batch came out better than my old cooker. The trick is also rinsing the rice until the water runs clear, which takes about 4 or 5 rinses. Now I'm wondering what other stuff I've been buying that I don't actually need. Has anyone else tried the finger trick, and does it work for brown rice too or just white?
