Rant: My cheap garlic press broke after 3 uses and left metal shavings in my pasta sauce

I bought this $5 garlic press from a dollar store in Phoenix last month because I forgot my good one at my sister's place. On the third time using it last Tuesday, the handle just snapped off and little bits of metal got into the sauce I was making for dinner. I had to pick through the whole pot and throw out that batch, which was a bummer because I had spent like $8 on fresh basil and tomatoes. Now I'm wondering if it's worth just using a knife to mince garlic instead of buying another gadget. Has anyone else had a cheap kitchen tool fail on them in a messy way?

Knife is always better, cheap gadgets are scams.
