Rant: my "quick" garlic trick backfired into a 45 minute cleanup

Last Tuesday I tried that hack where you shake garlic cloves in a metal bowl to peel them fast. Five cloves came out clean, but the other three shattered into sticky bits that glued themselves to the bowl and my counter. By the time I dug the slivers out of my sink drain with a chopstick, I could've just peeled them one by one. Has anyone else had this fail on them, or is my bowl just too small for the shake method?
