Derailleur hanger snapped 3 miles into a 40 mile ride in Tucson

Was climbing Gates Pass on my old Trek when the hanger just gave out and the derailleur went into the spokes. I had no spare hanger so I pulled the chain, shortened it with my multi tool, and ran it single speed to get home. Took me 90 minutes of pushing and coasting but I made it. Does anyone carry a spare hanger on every ride or do you just risk it?
