Hold up, I gotta call this one out. I've seen people do the sharpie trick and it masks the wobble more than it actually fixes it, especially on rims with significant lateral play. You're better off learning to use a spoke wrench and feel for tension with your fingers, that sharpie method can hide problems that'll come back to bite you on the next ride.

Look, I get what you're saying but honestly I think you're overcomplicating it. Not everyone needs to be a wheel building guru just to keep their bike rolling. The sharpie trick works fine for a quick visual check when you're in a hurry or don't have a truing stand handy. It's not meant to replace proper spoke tensioning, it's just a quick sanity check. If someone's got major lateral wobble then yeah they need real tools, but for small adjustments it gets the job done.
