My friend the framebuilder told me to stop using Park Tool's chain checker
A buddy of mine builds custom steel frames out of his garage in Portland. Last year he told me I was wasting my time with the Park Tool CC-2 chain checker. He said the little tool measures pin wear not roller wear and I'd be tossing chains way too early. I thought he was just being a snob about his fancy handmade bikes. But I tested his theory on my commuter bike that I ride 12 miles a day. I measured a chain that looked fine with the checker but it was already stretched past .75 with a caliper. Now I just use the 12 inch ruler method and it costs nothing. Has anyone else found the Park checker to be unreliable like that?

Ugh yeah I had the same thing happen. I was throwing away chains that still had life in them because the Park tool said they were done. Switched to the ruler method and saved so much money.

Read somewhere that the ruler method is actually more consistent because it measures true pin to pin wear. Been working great for my gravel bike too?
