Old mechanic in Tucson showed me how to true a wheel by feel instead of using a dial gauge

He just closed his eyes and spun the rim while barely touching the spokes, then handed it to me and said 'your turn kid,' and I messed up three spokes before I got the hang of it, has anyone else learned a weird hands-on trick that made you ditch the tools?
