Overheard a customer at the shop say he rides his carbon frame with a cracked seat tube
He was picking up a new chain and mentioned he's been riding his road bike for months with a visible crack near the clamp. Said he 'just keeps an eye on it.' I didn't say anything, but it's been on my mind all week. That's a catastrophic failure waiting to happen, right? How do you guys handle customers who ignore serious safety issues?

That mindset is everywhere, people ignoring clear warning signs. They treat a cracked frame like a weird engine noise, thinking it'll just go away. It's a special kind of stubborn that ends with a trip to the ER.

Sometimes you gotta push things to the limit to see what they can really take. Not every weird noise means the whole thing is about to blow.

palmer.jana's right that some people push things too far, but there's a big difference between testing limits and ignoring a crack that could snap mid-ride. That seat tube is basically holding your whole body up, and a crack near the clamp is asking for a face full of pavement. At some point being stubborn about a frame is just gambling with your teeth and collarbone.
