That freewheel removal advice from a retired racer saved me 2 hours last week

Old guy at the shop counter told me to always put the removal tool in a bench vise and turn the wheel instead of the other way around. Said he'd seen too many stripped hubs from people twisting the tool. Tried it on a stuck freewheel from a 90s Trek that I'd been fighting with for an hour. Worked on the first pull after I clamped the tool down. Anyone else use that vise trick or do you swear by the chain whip method still?
