The old head at my LBS called my wheel builds 'soft' so I stopped rushing the tension step
I build maybe 15 wheels a year at my shop and always figured a true rim with even tension was good enough. Then this retired builder named Walt at the shop down in Tacoma watched me finish a rear wheel and said my spokes felt 'soft' when he squeezed them, like a sponge instead of a guitar string. I started using a tensiometer on every spoke instead of just going by feel, and keeping a chart of the readings so I can see the pattern. Took me 3 wheels to stop second guessing myself, but the last set I did holds tension way better after 500 miles of gravel. Anyone else here use a tensiometer on every build or do you trust your hands once you get the feel down?
