Tried a new chain wear indicator tool and it read my brand new chain as worn out

I just grabbed one of those cheaper analog chain checkers off Amazon for $12 and when I clipped it on a fresh out of the box SRAM chain it showed 0.5% wear, so either the tool is junk or I'm crazy, anyone else run into a false wear reading on a new chain?

Was the chain properly clean and free of factory grease when you tested it? That sticky coating can throw off the simple spring-loaded checkers real bad. Did you try wiping the chain down with degreaser and rechecking to rule that out?

Man that's a really good point @coran63, I totally messed up and didn't even think about the factory grease messing with the readings. Feels dumb now but I'm gonna degrease it and retest tonight.

Eh, I kinda think grease doesnt matter that much on a simple tension test.
