My friend keeps skipping the first season of 'The Wire' and it drives me nuts

He says it's too slow and the police station politics are boring, so he starts with season 2. But that's like missing the whole foundation... you don't understand the characters or the city of Baltimore at all. Has anyone else dealt with a friend who skips crucial setup seasons in a show?

Missing the foundation is exactly right. My cousin did this with Breaking Bad, he started at season 3 because he heard it "got good" then. He had no idea why Walter was even cooking meth or who any of the side characters were. It ruined the whole show for him.

Yeah that reminds me of my friend who tried to watch Lord of the Rings starting with the second movie. He was totally lost about who the hobbits were or why the ring mattered. He kept asking me who that Gollum guy was and why he talked so weird. I told him he needed to go back but he never did, said it was too boring to start over. Just missed the whole point of the story.

Oh man, that's rough. I did something like that with The Wire, jumped into season 2 because a friend said it was the best. I had zero clue who any of the cops were or why the docks mattered. Felt like I walked into a test I didn't study for. I went back and watched from the start and it made all the difference, the payoff was so much bigger. Why do people skip the build-up like that?
