Debate: is it okay to fudge the rules when teaching new players?

Last game night I was teaching a group of 4 new folks how to play Scythe and I accidentally skipped the encounter card rule for the first two turns because they were already overwhelmed. My buddy says I cheated them out of the full experience but I think it kept them from quitting early. Which side do you fall on?

Yeah, keeping them from quitting is way more important than getting a rule right...

Honestly used to think getting the rules exactly right was the whole point. But yeah seeing people actually walk away over it kind of flips that thinking around. I mean if you lose good people because you wouldn't budge on some minor rule then what's the point of having the rule in the first place. Definitely changed how I see things.
