Had a game night derail because a player didn't know the rules

I was hosting a game of Root at my place in Portland last Friday. One guy kept making illegal moves for three rounds before anyone spoke up. I had to pause everything, pull up the rulebook, and walk through the woodland alliance scoring system step by step. Playground felt awkward for the rest of the night. Has anyone else had a newcomer throw off a complex game like that?

Pregame walkthroughs are a must for Root. One bad round can kill the whole vibe. Better to frontload the awkwardness than let it fester.

Printing out a quick reference card for each faction before game night has saved my bacon more than once. For Root specifically, I highlight the scoring triggers and movement restrictions on a half sheet of paper. Takes ten minutes but stops that awkward pause where everyone's pretending they knew the rules too.
