I finally had to pick between a co-op and a competitive game night with my group

My game group has 6 people and we've been playing mostly co-op stuff like Pandemic for months. Last week I suggested we try a competitive game instead, something like Catan or Ticket to Ride. Half the group got really into it but the other half kept complaining about the "take that" mechanics. We ended up cutting the night short after only two rounds. Has anyone else dealt with a group split like this, or do you just stick with one style and hope everyone stays happy?

I mean it's just game night not a marriage counseling session.

Wait you only got two rounds in before it fell apart? That's wild. I've had some tense game nights but never had to cut it short like that. Like we've had people get salty over Monopoly trades before but we always just laughed it off and kept rolling. I gotta say though, switching from full co-op to something like Catan with 6 people sounds like a recipe for disaster. That game gets cutthroat fast and some folks just can't handle losing those resources.
