I was dead wrong about solo board games always being boring

Tried playing Wingspan alone after swearing off solo modes for years and actually enjoyed 5 rounds of bird collecting more than most group games I've played this month... has anyone else found a solo game that surprised them?

Lean into that surprise feeling and run with it. The theme definitely helped hook me at first, but what really got me was how the solo mode forces you to make tough calls without anyone else to blame or cheer you. You start noticing little combos and strategies that would get drowned out in a group game, like figuring out which birds chain together for bonus points. It turns the whole thing into a quiet puzzle where every move actually matters a lot more than when you're just chatting across the table. Made me wonder how many other solo modes I've been sleeping on just because I assumed they'd be boring.

Was it the theme that hooked you or the actual mechanics of playing alone?
