My friend said board game geeks are just people who like to read rulebooks

We were setting up a game of Scythe last weekend, and he made a joke about how the real hobby is just studying the manual. It got me thinking, is that a fair dig? On one side, knowing the rules inside and out makes the game run smooth and fair for everyone. But on the other, does focusing too much on perfect play suck the fun out of it? I've seen games fall apart because someone spent 20 minutes arguing a tiny edge case. Where's the line between being a good player and just being a rule lawyer? What's your take?

Honestly, I used to be that guy who'd fight over every little rule. Now I'd rather just play the game and keep things moving.

Man, my buddy had a game night totally ruined by this. He was playing Terraforming Mars and one guy kept stopping to check the exact wording on every single card. It wasn't about strategy, it was just to prove he was right. The whole mood died because we were all just waiting on his rulebook searches. Knowing the rules is one thing, but using them like a weapon just kills the fun for everyone at the table. There's a big difference between helping the game run right and turning it into a boring argument.

Tbh my cousin had a guy like that in his group. They were playing Catan and he'd argue over the exact placement of the robber every single time. It just made everyone want to pack up and go home.
