My game group tried a full 8-player Twilight Imperium session and it broke us

We scheduled a full day last Saturday to finally play with the maximum player count. By hour six, three people had completely checked out on their phones, and two others were arguing about a trade deal from three rounds prior. The game just ground to a halt. In my experience, that epic 14-hour marathon you see online is a fantasy for most casual groups. We learned that our sweet spot is definitely four players, max five. Has anyone else had a big game totally fall apart because you pushed the player count too high?

Oh man, do I ever. We tried a six player game of something, I think it was Scythe, and it was a mess. I mean, by the time it got back to me I had totally forgotten what my plan even was. I spent half the time just staring at my cards trying to remember what I was doing. I think we all just got tired and started making dumb moves to end it. Maybe it's just me but I need a game to keep moving or my brain just checks out.

Six player Scythe sounds like actual torture, @claireo67. I would have lost my mind waiting that long.
