My sister said something about our game nights that got me thinking...
We were setting up for our usual Friday game night, and she mentioned she was tired of always playing the same three games. She said, "We call ourselves geeks but we never try anything new, we just keep playing Catan and Ticket to Ride." It hit different because she's right... we bought 12 new games last year and only learned two of them. We get stuck in a comfort zone and don't actually explore the hobby. Has anyone else fallen into a rut with their regular group, and how did you break out of it?

That's a classic board game group trap. We had the same issue with our group getting stuck on Wingspan for way too long. What finally worked was making a rule where the person who wins the old favorite has to pick and teach the next new game from the shelf. It spreads the learning work around and makes people actually open the boxes they bought.

We got stuck in a loop with Terraforming Mars for months. What worked was picking one new game a month and making it the main event, no fallbacks allowed. Starting with something short like Splendor helped get everyone on board.
