Old school board game guy told me to never trust a rulebook before playing twice

I ignored that advice when I taught Catan to a new group and we spent 45 minutes arguing about whether you can build a road through a settlement. Has anyone else had a house rule disaster from not reading the fine print first?

45 minutes of arguing over road placement? That's some really bad house rules.

Nah hard disagree. 45 minutes of arguing over roads is literally peak Catan. That's when the real game starts, when everyone's trying to block each other and haggle for that one spot on the map. My group once spent a whole hour fighting over a 9-5-10 intersection because nobody wanted to give up the sheep port. House rules or not, that's the fun of it. Plus those long debates make the final win sweeter when you pull it off.
