Our weekly game night nearly died after the host switched to a 20-minute timer

I watched our group of 8 regulars go from lively 3-hour sessions to quiet 45-minute wraps in about 6 weeks, all because someone insisted on speed-run rules for every game, and now I'm wondering if anyone else has seen a house rule quietly kill the fun before it gets voted out.

Is the timer the actual problem, or is it the host pushing it on everyone? Seems more like a group communication issue than a house rule thing.
