Rant: a guy at my Tuesday game night in Austin swore Catan gets better with 6 players, he was dead wrong
Played a 6 player game at our table on Rio Grande last week because Marcus kept pushing it, and we sat there for 2 and a half hours waiting on turns while two people never got a single good trade all night. The board got so clogged that the robber parked on the only decent hex by round 3 and half the table just checked out. 4 players is the sweet spot and no amount of house rules fixes that. Anyone else find a player count where a game just falls apart?
Honestly sitting through a 2.5 hour game sounds rough but that's on your group not the game itself. Six player Catan is a totally different beast, it's more about the social stuff and less about the tight strategy, so yeah the board clogs up and trades dry out, but that's kind of the point if everyone knows what they signed up for. Sounds like Marcus sold it as the same game with more people when it's really a party version, and half your table wanted the real thing. Two people getting no good trades is just bad luck and bad spots though, that happens in 4 player too. Maybe the issue is nobody set a time limit or agreed on the vibe before starting, not the player count by itself.
