Showerthought: nobody in my game group can explain the rules without winning the argument first
I have been running a weekly board game night in my garage here in Sacramento for about 3 years now, usually 5 or 6 people, and I finally figured out the real problem with teaching new games. It is not the rulebook and it is not the playtime. It is that the person who owns the game always explains it like they are defending a thesis, jumping straight to edge cases before anyone knows how a turn even works. Last Friday we spent 40 minutes on a mid weight euro because the owner kept interrupting himself with three exceptions to a rule we had not heard yet. I started making whoever teaches a game hand out cheat sheets with the turn order only, nothing else, and our first plays got about twice as fast. Has anyone else tried splitting the teach into two parts, base turn first and corner cases after round one?
