Had a foreman tell me my bevel angles were off on a job in Houston last spring

I was burning through tips on my torch and couldn't figure out why. He walked over, watched me for a minute, and said I was running my bevel at 20 degrees instead of 30. I had been doing it that way for two years thinking it was fine. Changed it to 30 right there and the weld penetration improved a lot. Also stopped wasting so much filler rod on each pass. Now I double check my setup before I even strike an arc. Has anyone else had a simple setup fix like that make a big difference on their work?

20 degrees is fine for a lot of joints if you're running a higher amperage and moving faster, plenty of guys swear by it for thin wall stuff. Sounds like you just needed to tweak your travel speed and filler rod angle instead of changing the whole bevel. Maybe that foreman had a preference but that doesn't mean 20 degrees was actually wrong for your setup.

Wait, don't you ever adjust your angle for thicker material too though?
