I used to skip the post weld heat treat on small nozzle welds, then my CWI showed me the hardness numbers
Last Tuesday our CWI pulled me aside at the shop in Tulsa and had me look at a hardness test log from a job I did 3 weeks earlier, and the heat affected zone on a 2 inch nozzle came back at 38 Rockwell C when it should have been under 22. I always figured small welds cooled fast enough that PWHT was overkill, but seeing those numbers on paper for a weld I ran myself flipped my thinking completely. How do you all decide when a small nozzle really needs the heat treat versus when it's just spec padding?
