Just read that a 1/8 inch weld gap can reduce heat input by almost 20% on some pipe joints
Found it in an old ASME code addendum from 2015 I was flipping through at the library. Always thought tighter was better for everything, but this specific note said for certain alloys and thicknesses, that small gap helps with distortion control. Blew my mind a little. Anyone run into this on a job, or is it more of a textbook thing?

Ever feel like the more you learn, the more you realize you've been doing it wrong? I've been cramming those joints tight for years like a total rookie.

Right? I used to think a super tight joint was the only sign of good work. Then I saw what a little proper gap can do for expansion and felt like a total fool. It's wild how one small detail changes everything.
