Made the mistake of buying a cheap welder on Amazon for $220

Saw a deal on some off brand welder and thought I was being smart saving cash. Hooked it up on a job site in Gary and it could barely run a 1/8 rod without overheating every 5 minutes. Ended up spending another $300 to get a proper Miller from the supply house that same afternoon. Anyone else get burned by those too good to be true prices on welding gear?

Nah sorry man but I gotta push back on this one. I grabbed a $180 HF special three years ago and its been a workhorse for light fab and farm repairs. Ran 6010 and 7018 all day on a 30A breaker without a hiccup. Sounds like you got a lemon or your outlet was dropping voltage. Not every cheap welder is a scam, you just gotta read the specs and know what you're getting into. Plenty of guys are running those imports fine for years if theyre not trying to weld 3/8 plate on a 110V circuit in a warehouse.
