My $250 used rigging beam was a gamble that paid off on a tight job

Picked it up from a crane yard in Gary last fall and it handled a 3,000 pound lift that a rental would've cost me triple, but the damn load rating tag was faded to nothing, so I had to trust my grind marks over the paperwork and it worked, anyone else ever roll the dice on surplus gear like that?
