My 7018 rod oven quit on a Friday and I almost welded the whole job with wet rods
Ran into a problem last Friday at the shop in Des Moines when our rod oven died overnight and I didn't notice until I grabbed a handful of 7018 for a pressure vessel job. I stuck about 6 rods before I caught the porosity, and had to grind out every pass I laid. Now I keep a cheap thermometer in the oven and test it Monday mornings before I strike an arc. Anybody else had a rod oven go out mid job, and how do you check yours?
Watched our oven breaker trip on a Sunday and walked into the same mess Monday, only I got through a whole root pass before the pinholes showed up. Spent half a day with a grinder and a bad attitude. Boss wasn't real happy about the rework either. Now I keep a $12 oven thermometer hanging on the door and check it every morning before I even flip my hood down. Cheap insurance beats grinding out good metal any day.
