Noticed a weird pattern in an old boiler room in Buffalo

I was doing a walkthrough of a 1930s building in Buffalo last month and spotted something that threw me off. The rivets on the drum were all staggered at a slight angle, not the straight rows you usually see. Turns out the original crew did that to spread stress after a patch job, and it held for 90 years. I've never seen that trick in any manual, so I snapped a few photos and tried it on a small patch last week. It laid down tight and took about 20 extra minutes per seam. Has anyone else run into old-school rivet patterns like that, or is this just a Buffalo thing?

The edge distance was the first thing I checked, honestly. Those last rivets on the patch needed a little more room than the pattern called for, so I pulled them back about an eighth of an inch and it still held fine, but you're right that plate thickness is the whole game. I've seen this trick fail on thin sheet metal because the stagger just doesn't give you enough bearing surface, it ends up tearing along the line instead of spreading the load. On anything over a quarter inch, though, that angled stagger seems to buy you some real forgiveness, like the metal flexes as a unit instead of fighting itself. My guess is the Buffalo crew figured that out the hard way back in the day, probably after a patch cracked on them once. If you try it, keep your spacing tight on the ends and don't trust it on anything thinner than 3/16, that's where I'd draw the line.

So did you actually get to see how they tied the new patch into those angled rows, or did you just match the angle and hope the stress spread was right? Because that's the part that bugs me, the staggered rivets might look simple but if the patch meets the old metal at the wrong spot, you could just be pushing the problem further down the plate. I've seen a few boiler repairs where the original crew did something weird and it worked, but only because the metal around it was still thick enough to take the load. You said it laid down tight, but what about the edge distance on those last few rivets, did you have to change your spacing to keep them from tearing out? I'm wondering if the Buffalo trick only holds up on certain plate thicknesses or if it's universal.
