Showerthought: the 3/4 inch plate on that pressure vessel in Gary taught me to double check the WPS before I strike an arc
Two winters back I was on a repair job in Gary, Indiana, and the fitter tacked a nozzle on a vessel that called for preheat to 200 degrees. I skipped the temp stick because the plate felt warm from the morning sun and the weld cracked about 2 feet of seam within an hour of cooling. We cut it out, re-preheated with a rosebud, and ran the pass again with no issues. Has anyone else had a WPS callout that seemed like overkill until it bit you?
Man, that warm plate trick gets everybody at least once. I had a similar thing on a 1 inch nozzle weld where the WPS said 250 preheat and I figured the shop was already warm enough, then watched a crack run right through the HAZ before the thing even cooled down. Temp sticks are cheap, and a rosebud and a cutout are not. Now I keep a few in my pouch and hit the joint a few inches back from where I'm gonna start. That sun-warm steel will fool you every time because it feels fine on your hand but it's nowhere near what the book calls for.
