That job at the paper mill in Oregon changed how I prep tube sheets
I was working a shutdown at a paper mill near Portland back in March. The foreman had me start welding tube sheets straight out of the crate without any cleaning. I figured he knew what he was talking about since he had 30 years in. By the third day we had porosity coming through on almost every other joint. Had to grind out and re-weld about 40 tubes. Now I always wipe down the sheets with acetone and a rag before I even strike an arc. Has anyone else run into bad prep advice from old timers that cost you time?

Always trust your own eyes over someone's years. Dirty tube sheets will cost you every time.
