That new ultrasonic thickness gauge from the big rental house needs a firmware update before trust.

It gave me readings that were off by a full millimeter on a known sample.

It's like everything needs an update before it works right these days.

But was it ever different? Stuff always had bugs or issues straight out of the box. What changed to make day one updates the normal fix instead of shipping finished products?

Last November, I bought a new smart TV that needed a firmware update right out of the box. I had to connect it to Wi-Fi and wait an hour before all the features worked. What worked for me was setting it up in the evening so the update could run while I slept. Now I just assume everything will need a patch on day one. It's frustrating, but at least the fixes come quickly. I miss when things just worked from the start!
