This old welder in a Galveston shipyard told me something I still think about

Tbh, we were prepping a big boiler section, maybe 2 inch plate, and I was grinding a bevel like my life depended on it. He just stopped and said, 'Kid, you're fighting the metal. Let the tool do the work.' He showed me how to adjust my angle and pressure, and the grinder just glided. Honestly, it cut my time in half. Anyone else get a piece of advice that just clicked like that?

Wait, what if you're working with something that fights back though? I had a teacher who always said "let the tool do the work" but on super gunked up or rusted metal, that feels wrong. Sometimes you gotta lean into it and fight a little at the start to break through. Letting the tool glide only works once the surface is ready.

Remember that old vise at my grandpa's shop? Thing was totally seized. @juliah23 Your comment made me think of how we had to basically jump on the handle to crack it loose before any "letting the tool work" could happen.
