Why does nobody talk about grinding with the grain instead of against it?

Old timer at the union hall told me to try grinding with the grain on carbon steel heads last year. I thought he was nuts until I tried it on a big repair job in Detroit and the welds held way better. Has anyone else gotten flak for switching up their grinding direction?

Joke's on me, I spent years grinding against the grain like a stubborn mule.

Wait, you were literally grinding against the grain? Like, wood grain? That sounds insane. I had a buddy who tried to go against the flow in his carpentry business and he ended up splitting more boards than he finished. You must have had splinters for days if you were actually physically doing that. Honestly, I think there's something admirable about that level of stubbornness, even if it did backfire on you.
