A comment from my dentist made me question my book club's whole vibe
He said, 'You all seem to just pick books you already agree with,' and that hit different because our group in Madison has been avoiding 'American Dirt' for two years, calling it too controversial.

That dentist has a point. It's like only ever eating at the same three restaurants because you know you'll like the food. You see it everywhere, from the news channels people watch to the neighborhoods they choose. Comfort feels safe, but it makes the whole world smaller. Your book club avoiding a tough read is just the polite version of that.

Remember that podcast with the librarian who said the best book clubs have at least one pick a year that makes someone leave? It was about how real growth happens when you're a bit mad at the book. Your dentist might be onto something.
