Appreciation post: Our group finally tried a graphic novel and it was a hit
For years, our club stuck to classic novels and new fiction. A few members kept pushing to try a graphic novel, but I was sure it wouldn't lead to a good talk. I thought the pictures would leave less to discuss. Last month, we read 'Maus' by Art Spiegelman. I was wrong. The art did not take away from the story, it added a whole new layer. We spent over an hour just talking about how the animal characters changed how we felt about the history. It opened up conversations we never had with a regular book. Has your group had a good experience with a book in a format you first doubted?

Totally! I was the same way with 'Watchmen'. The art made the story way more intense.

Honestly, same thing happened with my book club. We read 'Persepolis' and I thought it was just gonna be a quick read with not much to talk about. Tbh, the art made the whole story hit way harder. We ended up talking more about that book than anything else we've read. It totally changed my mind about the whole format.

Right? The pictures add a whole other layer you just don't get from plain text. It makes the heavy stuff feel way more real. I get why it changed your mind.
