Blew through 3 book club picks before I admitted I was the problem, not the books

Our club kept picking these literary fiction novels that everyone else seemed to love and I just... hated them. For about 6 months I thought the group had bad taste. Then I read Project Hail Mary for my own fun and brought it to a meeting as a joke. Two people cried laughing during the discussion. Turns out I just need books that actually move fast and have some humor in them. Has anyone else realized they were forcing themselves through books that just weren't their style because of peer pressure?

Oh man, that's not really peer pressure though. More like you just hadn't figured out what clicks for you yet.

Wait, did you ever see what happened to my friend Sarah when she tried to get into running? She kept buying all these fancy shoes and gear because her coworkers were doing these weekend 5Ks, and she felt so left out. But the thing was, she absolutely hated every second of it (like, she'd come home and complain for hours). It wasn't until she stopped trying to be like them and started doing yoga in her living room that she actually found something she loved. So yeah, I think it's a mix of figuring out what clicks for you and maybe a little bit of feeling like you should do what everyone else is doing.
