Bought the 'complete' annotated edition for our club and it was missing half the essays
Our group picked a classic author for the quarter, so I spent $45 on what the site called the 'definitive' annotated version. Turns out it only had the main novels, not the short story collection we planned to discuss. Had to buy a second book for the meetings, so that was a total waste. Anyone have a good source for checking what's actually included in these big editions before buying?

Ended up in the same boat last year with a collected works that was supposed to have everything but stopped at volume two. What finally worked for me was finding a used copy listing on eBay or Abebooks where someone posted a photo of the actual table of contents. Not a stock image but a real picture of the book they had. That's how I caught that my edition was missing three critical essays from the back half. Saved me from buying it twice.

Check the actual ISBN on the publisher's own website. The online store description is often wrong, but the publisher's listing usually has the exact table of contents. I've found that's the only way to be sure what you're getting.

That's a solid tip about the publisher's site. Sometimes even their listings can be vague though, so I'll look for a PDF sample or a scanned preview of the table of contents online. It takes an extra minute but saves that exact frustration. Have you found the samples to be reliable?
