Changed my mind on rating books in book club after a fight over a 2 star review in March
Our club in Sacramento did a 2 star book in March. I gave it 2 stars and wrote a short note on why the ending did not work for me. One member got upset and said a low score shuts down talk before it starts.
I thought that was silly at the time. Then we met at Rosa's place and the room split. Half of us defended scores, half wanted scores gone. The people against scores kept talking for an hour anyway, way more than usual. They brought up stuff I never would have caught, like the sister's job being mentioned twice and never again.
So now I think the number is the problem. Two people can put 3 stars and mean totally different things. We voted 7 to 4 to drop scores for the summer and just bring one question each.
Has any club here tried dropping stars and had it stick? Or did you all go back to numbers after a while?
