DAE's book club argue about a made-up soup until someone almost cried?
We read this mystery book where the detective solves a case by tasting a special soup. At our meeting, Mark insisted the soup recipe in the book would never work because you can't caramelize onions that fast. Sarah shot back that it was fiction and we should just enjoy the story. Then, out of nowhere, Linda pulled out a pot from her bag and said she tried making it, but it tasted like dishwater. Everyone had to try a spoonful, and it was honestly gross. The fight got so loud about broth bases and simmer times that Linda's eyes welled up. I work in a kitchen, so I bit my tongue to not say the book's cooking steps were silly. We finally dropped it when someone pointed out the murderer was the butler, not the chef.

Defend Mark's right to nitpick the soup science. If the book gets basic cooking wrong, what else did it mess up?

Last month, I tried the soup recipe from that book and the broth never reduced right. I used to think small recipe errors were fine, but Mark's focus on the cooking science changed my mind. If they mess up basic steps like boiling times, the fancier methods could be off too. Take that with a grain of salt, but it made me more careful.
