Had a chat with my mom that changed how I see book club debates

Last Tuesday, my mom dropped by and saw me getting heated over a book club forum argument about whether the main character in "Project Hail Mary" was too predictable. She just said, "you used to read for fun, not for winning." That hit different because she was right. I've been so focused on being right in debates that I forgot books are supposed to be about connection, not competition. Now I'm trying to only join conversations where I actually want to hear the other side. Has anyone else had a family member call them out and make them rethink their whole book club style?

My book club had a rule where you had to say something you liked about the book before you could criticize it, and it totally killed the competitive vibe. Might be worth suggesting to your group lol
