I used to hate literary fiction until one book flipped a switch for me

For years I only read thrillers and sci-fi because I thought literary novels were just slow descriptions of weather. Then my book club picked "Pachinko" by Min Jin Lee and I had to read 500 pages about Korean immigrants in Japan. A month later I couldn't stop thinking about how the characters felt like real people I knew, not just plot movers. Anybody else have a single book that completely changed what you enjoy reading?

Three hundred pages of weather descriptions in my last lit fic pick made me drop it.

Ugh, I feel that so hard @king.aaron. I just read some article about how some famous authors think weather is like a "character" in the story, but that's just too much for me. No thanks on that.
