My book club hit 50 meetings without me noticing...

I was looking back at our group chat and counted 50 weekly book club meetings we've had since we started in 2021. That's 50 books we actually finished and argued about! I never thought we'd make it past the first 5 meetings honestly. The milestone made me realize how much our debates have changed too. We went from arguing about plot holes to having real fights about character motivations and author intent. Has anyone else been surprised by a specific number of meetings or books your group has gotten through?

My group hit 47 books before someone pointed it out, and I about fell out of my chair. We started during lockdown in 2020 and never slowed down either. The shift you're describing is real though. Halfway through we realized we weren't just talking about plot points anymore, we were debating whether the author actually understood their own character's psychology. That's when you know you've got a good group that actually reads the stuff. How did your group handle the first big disagreement that went beyond simple plot holes?

Did your group ever have someone quit because they said a character reminded them too much of an ex? That happened in my group three meetings in and we never saw him again. Meanwhile, we just finished a book where the main character was a sentient houseplant and that somehow caused less drama than his exit.
