Our book club meeting in a Phoenix library turned into a silent screaming match

We were discussing a character's motives and two members got so heated they started mouthing angry arguments without sound. Now we vote on debate topics before anyone picks a book. Anyone else have a book club that needed rules after a blowup?

Was it over something like a moral choice, or just how believable the character was? I mean, we had to ban talking about politics in any book after a fight about a historical fiction character's voting habits. Now we just stick to what's actually written on the page.

Yeah sticking to the page is the only way. We had to make a rule that if it's not in the text, it's not up for debate. Saves so much time.
