Our book club picked a 700 page fantasy novel and only 3 people finished it.

We were at my house for the meeting last Tuesday. The host, Sarah, had made snacks based on the book, but most of us hadn't read past chapter ten. It got awkward when she asked a detailed plot question and the room went quiet. I suggested we just talk about the world-building from the parts we did read, which saved the night. Has your group ever had a book that almost everyone gave up on?

Feel for you, that sounds super awkward lol. Totally agree with @the_wyatt, forcing a finish just kills the club vibe. Glad you pivoted the chat and saved it.

That part about saving the night by just talking about the world-building you did read is so smart. I used to be the person who would push through a bad book just to finish it, no matter what. But last year, our club tried a famous mystery that was just painfully slow. We all hated it by the halfway point. Making everyone finish it felt like homework, and it killed the fun. Now I totally agree that it's better to just talk about what you did get through and then move on to something better. What did you all end up picking for your next book?

Heard a podcast say most clubs drop one book a year.
